National Dong Hwa University and Shoufeng Junior High School Collaborations International Students Participate in Campus English Singing Competition

Shoufeng Junior High School in Hualien County held a campus English singing competition, with faculty and students from National Dong Hwa University(NDHU)in attendance. The event took place on December 31, 2025, at Shoufeng Junior High School, where students from each class performed English songs and showcased their talents on stage. Faculty and students from NDHU's Department of Finance and the Department of English, as well as the Ph.D. Program in Asia-Pacific Regional Studies, served as hosts and judges. The long-term partnership and resource sharing between Shoufeng Junior High School and NDHU exemplify a model of university social responsibility and a new approach to localized engagement by international students.

To enrich the campus international learning environment, encourage students' self-confidence, and connect with university resources, Shoufeng Junior High School collaborated with NDHU to organize this English singing competition, creating an opportunity for shared growth and mutual benefit. NDHU was represented by Professor Jin-ray Lu, Chair of the Department of Finance, together with international graduate students from the Department of Finance, Tina from Malawi; Hien, a Vietnamese doctoral student from the Asia-Pacific Studies program; and Jiang Shih-Yu from the Department of English. Jiang Shih-Yu served as the event host, while Tina and Hien acted as judges. The entire event-including instructions, performances, and judging-was conducted in English. Teachers and students from both institutions participated enthusiastically, with applause and cheers filling the venue.

Lu Yi-Ling, Director of Academic Affairs at Shoufeng Junior High School, noted that the purpose of holding the English singing competition was to enhance students' motivation to learn English, foster a campus learning environment with an international perspective, and promote natural interaction between students and people from different cultural backgrounds, while maintaining a close, long-term partnership with NDHU. Tina, an international student from NDHU's Department of Finance, expressed her delight at being invited to serve as a judge and highly praised the students' performances, commending Taiwanese adolescents for their English pronunciation and stage presence.

Professor Jin-ray Lu, Chair of NDHU's Department of Finance, stated that in addition to acquiring professional knowledge on campus, participation in off-campus activities is an important learning experience for international students and allows them to contribute to the internationalization of primary and secondary education in Taiwan. He also noted that the Department of Finance at NDHU has promoted various university social responsibility initiatives, particularly through collaborations with local schools, community organizations, and indigenous communities. These initiatives enable faculty members, local students, and international students to engage in community service, creating diverse learning opportunities and fostering cultural exchange.
