NDHU Releases 2024 Sustainability Report, Highlighting Disaster Preparedness and Resilience Efforts

On September 30, 2025, National Dong Hwa University (NDHU) officially released its 2024 Sustainability Report. In addition to a one-page summary, a sustainability feature, and performance highlights that present the university's concrete actions in ecological conservation, talent cultivation, and social engagement, the report also, for the first time, introduced the Important Performance Analysis(IPA)method into stakeholder survey assessments. This approach identified key material topics and incorporated disaster preparedness into the report, unveiling NDHU's long-accumulated research outcomes on disaster management as well as actions taken after the April 3 Hualien Earthquake(0403). NDHU aspires to become a leading research hub in eastern Taiwan and on the international stage, contributing to disaster risk reduction.
The NDHU Eastern Taiwan Earthquake Research Center has long been committed to earthquake and disaster adaptation research, in collaboration with domestic and international institutions. After the 0403 earthquake, NDHU actively integrated seismic observation capacities, planned post-disaster field investigations, and partnered with the National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction(NCDR)and the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering(NCREE)to conduct disaster surveys. At the same time, the university engaged with the public to explain earthquake characteristics and monitoring status, thereby enhancing its visibility and social impact.
In addition, to strengthen community resilience, NDHU has worked with government, community, and civil society partners. The university has participated in the Ministry of the Interior's "Resilient Taiwan-Large-Scale Typhoon and Earthquake Preparedness Program", and cooperated with the Hualien County Government to promote disaster prevention specialist training and to establish the Hualien Disaster Prevention Information Platform, creating safer communities through joint efforts.
Beyond repairing damaged infrastructure after the earthquake, NDHU also cares deeply about the physical and mental well-being of students and community residents. The university launched the "Green Healing" initiative, integrating counseling, social services, aromatherapy, art therapy, and horticultural therapy to implement a series of healing and recovery actions across campus and communities, helping people cope with post-disaster psychological challenges.
The year 2024 was both difficult and challenging for NDHU. With the release of the 2024 Sustainability Report, the university reflects on its past efforts and expresses gratitude for the support from government, industry, and academic partners. Looking ahead, NDHU is committed to addressing challenges such as disaster preparedness and climate change, while leveraging its strengths in research and education to deepen sustainability governance and work together with stakeholders to realize the NDHU 2030 Sustainability Vision.
The 2024 Sustainability Report was co-authored with Leadership Management Consulting Co., Ltd., and externally assured by TÜV NORD Taiwan Co., Ltd., ensuring the professionalism and accuracy of the report.
