National Dong Hwa University(NDHU)has a strong commitment to sustainable development, as evidenced by its consistent publication of annual sustainability reports. The 2022 report, which delves into the university's actions and performance in environmental conservation, social engagement, and talent development, particularly in ESG aspects, has received prestigious accolades. It was honored with the Gold level in the 16th Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards(TCSA)for the sustainability report and the Excellent Sustainable Taiwanese University award. This external recognition highlights NDHU's dedication to diverse educational aspects, earning well-deserved commendation.

Following the signing of the University Sustainable Development Goals Declaration in 2020 and the establishment of the 2030 Sustainable Development Vision, NDHU has taken steps to fulfill its commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The university initiated the planning of a carbon-neutral roadmap, showcasing its green impact. Utilizing smart technology facilities to enhance teaching effectiveness, connecting with the surrounding community and industries, and integrating the core values of sustainable education into mid-to-long-term campus development, NDHU is fostering a "Five toGether"(5G)model, emphasizing collaboration, learning, creation, shared benefits, and prosperity. NDHU has also collaborated with eight other national universities to form the "Taiwan University Alliance for Sustainable Governance" establishing a network to exchange sustainable development practices among universities.
The 2022 sustainability report begins with a dedicated chapter highlighting NDHU's achievements in biodiversity and ecological conservation. Collaborating with the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, NDHU has undertaken habitat restoration, conducted an inventory of biodiversity data, and assessed the ecosystem service values of the "Forest, River, Fields and Sea" on the East Coast of Hualien. To address the threat of wildlife mortality due to roads, NDHU has provided survey records from its Hualien and Shoufeng campus to the Taiwan Biodiversity Research Institute, contributing to the development of an app that alerts pedestrians to slow down in roadkill hotspots, making a tangible contribution to ecological conservation.

In addition, NDHU, actively deploying solar photovoltaic panels, achieved a solar energy generation of over 3.63 million kilowatt-hours in 2022, resulting in a carbon reduction of 1,823 metric tons. The university stands out as the most power-generating school in Taiwan. Collaborating with the Industrial Technology Research Institute and photovoltaic industry partners, NDHU initiated a photovoltaic health check in Hualien's Taroko Datong Tribe, installing photovoltaic energy storage equipment. The university provided training on basic maintenance and management techniques to residents, transforming green energy into a new form of community participation by supplying electricity to the tribe. This effort contributes to illuminating the tribe and addressing the inequality in energy use.
